Standard ratios for every brew method
| Method | Ratio | Example dose → water/beverage |
|---|---|---|
| Ristretto | 1:1 – 1:1.5 | 18 g → 18–27 g beverage |
| Espresso (normale) | 1:2 | 18 g → 36 g beverage |
| Lungo | 1:2.5 – 1:3 | 18 g → 45–54 g beverage |
| Pour over (V60, Origami) | 1:16 | 15 g + 240 g water |
| Chemex | 1:16 | 30 g + 500 g water |
| AeroPress (standard) | 1:13 – 1:15 | 15 g + 200 g water |
| French press | 1:15 – 1:17 | 30 g + 450–510 g water |
| Batch brew | 1:15 – 1:17 | 60 g + 1000 g water |
| Cold brew (concentrate) | 1:4 – 1:8 | 200 g + 800–1600 g water |
How to use the result
- Place the scale under the brewer. Tare with the dose loaded.
- Pour until the scale reads the target. Don't pour by time; pour by weight.
- For espresso: the target is the beverage in the cup. Stop the pump when the scale reads the target yield.
- For filter: the target is total water poured. The bed will retain ~25–35% of that as wet grounds; your cup will be slightly less.
When to change ratio
- Balanced but weak: Tighten by 1 point (1:17 → 1:16).
- Balanced but overwhelming: Loosen by 1 point (1:15 → 1:16).
- Sour and thin: Don't touch ratio. Grind finer first.
- Bitter and harsh: Don't touch ratio. Grind coarser first.
Ratio vs. extraction
Ratio sets a strength range; extraction yield determines whether the cup tastes good inside that range. Two cups at identical 1:16 can taste very different depending on grind, temperature, and water. If you have a refractometer, calculate extraction with the extraction calculator →
Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for coffee brew ratio?
Water = Dose × Ratio. Example: 15 g × 16 = 240 g water for 1:16. Espresso: Beverage = Dose × Ratio (18 g × 2 = 36 g).
What is the best coffee-to-water ratio?
1:16 is the safe default for filter. 1:2 is modern espresso default. Lighter roasts often prefer 1:15; darker roasts often 1:17–1:18.
How much coffee for one cup?
Single cup pour over: 15 g coffee + 240 g water. Single espresso: 18 g coffee → 36 g beverage.
Should I weigh water by volume or by weight?
Weight. Water is ~1 g per ml at brewing temperature. A scale is more accurate than a measuring cup; weighing dose + water is the single biggest accuracy upgrade.
